Popeye And Olive Oyl: A True Match Made In Heaven

New research has come out to again support the use of olive oil.

A compound in extra virgin olive oil, called oleocanthal, was found to have anti-inflammatory action comparable to ibuprofen. Oleocanthal was discovered to hinder the same two inflammatory enzymes that are inhibited by ibuprofen. Keep in mind that the amounts of oleocanthal in olive oil are more diluted compared to the medication, therefore you would need an equivalent of about a cup of olive oil to get the same pain-relieving effects of a standard dose of ibuprofen. Still, there are other reasons to consider adding olive oil to your diet.

What's the Popeye connection? Although Popeye at spinach for strength, the nutrients in spinach can also help with conditions in which inflammation plays a role. For example, arthritis and asthma are all conditions that involve inflammation. Beta-carotene and vitamin C have anti-inflammatory properties and both are found in spinach. Olive oil actually may help us to absorb the beta carotene in spinach and also the fat soluble nutrient lutein, which helps protect the eyes.

Spinach is also a decent source of iron, an important nutrient for menstruating women. In addition, the magnesium and riboflavin in spinach may help to decrease the frequency of migraines.
